911 - SuperJazzClub Review

By Alex Walden

Hip hop is in a confusing place right now. It has become so diverse that you can’t possibly pick an artist to define the genre, especially in the new generation and SuperJazzClub’s new track ‘911’ proves exactly that.

The songs starts out with a crisp soft keyboard sample which when accompanied by the drums and opening melody, instantly took me back to the feeling of elegance and classiness that one experiences when listening to a Brent Faiyaz song. But then you’re quickly taken to the chorus hook which has the catchiness of a 90’s RnB song, I can easily see the lines “911,There’s a killer on the run” getting stuck in my head like the hook of a Ludacris or Aaliyah song would back in the day.

Tano Jackson’s verse in the bridge has a ring to it as well which can be heard in the lines “Glock on my waist, nine-millimetre Back and forth, something’ like Aaliyah”. Something about the way its performed with such colloquialism just makes the words speak to you as if it’s saying, “yeah we know we’re good, we listened to Aaliyah growing up, how can we not be?”. But it’s the verse from Ansah Live that really drives the song, it’s a mix of continuously flowing with the track in a melodic fashion yet also battling it, as if him and the beat are trying to outshine each other.

This track works so well purely due to SuperJazzClub being able to almost float upon this track and effortlessly achieve more by seemingly doing less with their simplistic but catchy lyrics. From the video alone you can tell that this group has so much swagger and talent; it really feels like you’re listening to artists who have studied the greats and now not only want, but deserve their own shot at success.

Listen to ‘911’ here.
