Can’t You Love Us The Same? -

Chloe & The Brainwaves Single Review

By Eli Andrew

Lyrically raw, Chloe & The Brainwaves’ latest single explores the human need to be valued for who we are without comparison to others. It is a personal exploration from front-woman Chloe Gardner, but also a universally relatable concept of shared suffering and the human condition. Perhaps even more so in the social media age, where comparisons to others’ lives have become commonplace.

The song is epic in sound and scope, the opening chords and dreamy vocals would not seem out of place opening the latest Bond flick. Later there are smatterings of Irish folk; you can envision the tune in a fantasy-adventure film, or an episode of Peaky Blinders with the moody guitar chords and ethereal atmosphere. Gardener’s melancholy, Jeff Buckley-like vocals are joined by Michael Potts’ melodic guitars, with Lewis Cooke’s intricate bass work and Alex Baker’s powerful drums driving the rhythm.

It is an epic yet poignant tune, the expansive sound accompanied by pensive lyrics of unworth and a longing for acceptance. You can hear the influence of Joni Mitchell in Gardner’s emotionally bare lyrics, the chorus more than just a sing-along, but a therapeutic release. You can hear this release likewise in the accompanying music, as it gets heavier, angrier, as the tune reaches its climax. Make no mistake, despite a tender subject matter, this is alt/indie-rock designed to fill the room during live performances. The song culminates in crescendoing vocals, crashing symbols and the haunting, almost pleading refrain: ‘Can’t You Love Us The Same?’.
