Deeper - Moonlight Academy
Single Review
By Eli Andrew
Moonlight Academy’s ‘Deeper’ is an indie rock anthem designed for big stages and sing-alongs, in the vein of Catfish & the Bottlemen and Sam Fender. It’s an anthemic tune featuring catchy pop hooks, energetic riffs and tender lyrics centred on youth, young love and growing up. The London outfit’s big choruses and yearning melodies will sound nostalgic and familiar to those of us who grew up in the 00s/10s on The Kooks and Kings of Leon, while also resonating with fans of the newer school of Indie and Alternative bands, such as the Amazons and Inhaler.
Although a familiar sound, there is no denying the charisma and energy of the band, the punching bass lines and pounding drums creating an infectious rhythm over which jangly indie guitars and powerful lyrics complete the larger-than-life soundscape. There are even subtle 80s-style synths on display here, heard most clearly during the breakdown in the final third of the song.
Like all good Indie bands, the lyrics capture a certain essence of young adulthood. Tales of first love and leaving your hometown will either remind you of your own adolescence, or strike a chord with the current generation experiencing these milestones for the first time. Either way, Moonlight Academy are here to encapsulate that feeling.
