DON’T - LØLØ Single Review
By Irina Adanasiu
Canadian singer-songwriter Lauren Mandel, known by her stage name LØLØ, has released a new fun pop-punk track ‘DON’T!’ which describes the feeling of thinking about a toxic ex-partner when you know you shouldn’t be. ‘DON’T!’ follows on from her debut album ‘falling for robots and wishing I was one’ which was released in June 2024. The track is accompanied by a high-energy music video directed by Justin Alexis.
The lyricism in ‘DON’T!’ is playful yet achingly vulnerable, what with lines such as “Is he hot or is he comfortable? Come on, honey, have some self-control” which are simultaneously witty and emotionally compromising. LØLØ sings all about how she is trying to console herself and resist the temptation of reconciling with a former partner, repeatedly screaming at herself “DON’T!”.
Sonically, the track has a modern pop-punk feel, reminiscent of an Olivia Rodrigo song due to its spoken word verses and the overall subject matter. Although the song is rooted in classic alternative-pop/rock sounds, it manages to burst with originality due to LØLØ’s own unique takes on the genre.
LØLØ has already managed to make significant strides in the industry, what with being on the covers of Rock Sound and Kerrang! as well as touring the US with emo pop artist jxdn and joining Simple Plan for a duet on the Avril Lavigne Greatest Hits Tour. I am looking forward to see what else this rising pop-punk star has in store for the near future.
