Heavy - The Eeps

Single Review

By Irina Atanasiu

Alternative-rock band The Eeps have just released their debut single ‘Heavy’ on November 23rd. The track is lyrically raw and vulnerable, given how explicit it is in its exploration of depression and coping with negative emotions. The Eeps take inspiration from rock legends such as The Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin and Green Day and they manage to do so while also adding their own unique spin on this new track. ‘Heavy’ is indeed sonically reminiscent of rock music from the 1970’s, with instrumentals that would most likely resonate with fans of The Beatles and David Bowie.

In addition to tackling the theme of depression, the track also explores feelings of being marginalised and not fitting in, particularly with lyrics such as “my mind keeps questioning every single day, why my brain isn’t wired to work the same way” and “maybe I’ll be accepted for who I am, living in the world between a girl and a man”. The song seems to be addressed to a lover; the last line of the song “I hope I get this right, will you be here tonight” expresses the feeling of wanting to finally make things right with a partner and wanting to feeling secure in the relationship.

Although this is the band’s first single, they have already started making a name for themselves in the London music scene having played at multiple music venues across the city. This is the first of many releases from The Eeps, so if you’re a fan of alternative-rock music then you’ll definitely want to keep an eye out for everything else this band has in store for the future!
