Implode - Doubt Kills
Single Review
By Eli Andrew
Doubt Kills’ ‘Implode’ is a catchy slice of noisy pop-punk with angsty lyrics and anthemic choruses. Vocal duties are shared between the two bandmates Jake Robbins and Ben McKelvey, with Robbins taking the first verse, followed by McKelvey on the second. It’s almost like a therapy session between the two; the call and response style like a personal conversation between the evidently old mates. The reverb guitar riff is reminiscent of some of Blink 182’s slower hits, with the rowdy emo/pop-punk sound also comparable to Fall Out Boy and All Time Low.
The band state Motion City Soundtrack as an influence, which you can hear in the emo-style vocals and pensive lyrics breaking down anxiety, mental health and personal struggles. PUP are another clear influence, from the sheer noise of the group to the equally reflective lyrics delivered with sincerity and tongue-in-cheek humour. Just as it is for PUP and Blink, humour is important here, as although ‘Implode’ is more brooding than funny, Doubt Kills are more than just the music; check out their YouTube page for a series of skits and sketches that are just as important to them as an outlet as the music is.
