Just for a Minute - Velvet Lies

By Holly Farmer

Indie-synth-pop band Velvet Lies encompass a unique retro energy within their music. The band came together after discussing what goes into making the perfect song. Drawing from Kate Bush, Tears for Fears and Duran Duran (to name a few) they jotted down key themes onto the back of a cigarette box and decided it was their time to create such music.

I first listened to their newest track “Just For A Minute” on the bus, with the sun blaring on me and quickly immersed in the funky baseline and sparkling chimes. Sung with soft raspy vocals, the lyrics follow a person calling out a deceitful lover. The song feels like they’re rising above their lies, ascending into clarity.

My favourite part was the twanging synthesizer solo followed by a smooth guitar solo. Just before the song ends, the pitch heightens. At this point the chorus line “just for a minute, had me believe it” grows in catchiness as soft chants slowly fade out with the song.

For me, this funky track is definitely one to enjoy whilst watching a sunset- one for this year's summer playlist! Looking forward to what’s in store for Velvet Lies this year!
