We Don’t Want You Now - Lake Acacia

Single Review

By Andy Portou

Beloved Banbury act Lake Acacia have a new single out. It’s dark, moody and oscillates between subtle dread and explosive choruses.

There’s a lot to love in this new single. The verses are coated in a brooding electronic tinge, slowly building in tension until exploding into a bass-riff heavy chorus. There’s a lot of great compositional detail throughout the song too, with repeated open-ended chords occasionally resolving into major chords during key moments of the song; these major chords often resolve back into the gloom from which they originally came, adding another layer to this song’s sinister feel.

This track also features production from Glen Robinson, known for his work with U2, David Bowie and Dave Grohl. After coming across the band’s page while scrolling on Facebook, he reached out and offered to help produce several tracks with the band. My immediate thought when first hearing We Don’t Want You Now was how similar it sounds to bands like Royal Blood and Muse, an influence Glen also picked up on.

By far my favourite part of the track is the ending breakdown, which ramps up with double-time drums and an even heavier emphasis on the song’s distorted bass riff. The chorus lyrics are spiteful in the best way possible, a revenge anthem with a loud, jeering chorus aimed at deceitful people. I do have some small reservations about the verses though, as the vocal melodies in this section feel a little underdeveloped, and I would love to see the band take even bolder risks to amp up their production even further. Still, this is an enjoyable song and, with several new songs releasing this autumn, we won’t have to wait long to see what else the band is cooking up!
