Lately - Emily Fields
Single Review
By Clare Cordell
Emily Fields is a London based indie artist, who turns her journal entries into emotional pop girlie bangers!
I am obsessed with the concept of diary entries as songs. This I something I relate to wholeheartedly as a fellow journal queen. Lyrics can be fun and catchy, but at the heart of it they are human experiences and when they are raw and relatable is when I am most engaged as a listener!
Her debut single ‘17’ flew straight to number 21 on the iTunes pop chart! Emily’s music has also been featured on Love Island and has been gained significant radio play with multiple coverage on BBC introducing, including a 10-minute artist feature.
Emily’s newest track ‘Lately’ is a pop / R&B track that explores the complexity of healing a past relationship. The song was produced by the incredible Joffy James and mastered by Weird Jungle.
Emily’s voice is soulful and powerful, she gives me Jasmine Sullivan vibes and I’m completely entranced by her tone. Tone is HUGE for me when I listen to new artists and Emily has it for DAYS.
This song belongs in a montage scene in a romcom movie where the lead character is going through the motions after a breakup then over time comes to the realisation that SHE IS ENOUGH! It is an empowering and relatable song and its now firmly on my list of songs I wish I’d written myself!
Emily wrote ‘Lately’ during a period of massive personal transformation and hopes that the song can lend a helping hand to anyone navigating their own personal healing journey, even if it is just to serve as a reminder that it is okay to feel the way you feel!
You can really hear the R&B influences in this track and Emily’s vocal skill is showcased throughout the song with a GORGOUS whistle note ending.
Obsessed. I want to screw my face up with passion and throw my shoe at her with joy!
Seriously. I love this song, and I think it is going to be a new addition to my ‘slay era’ playlist!
