Oh My God - Tiffany Stringer
Single Review
By Emily Jordan
Littered with expletives and bleeding a near manic frustration, Oh My God by American Idol’s Tiffany Stringer leaves the listener disinterested despite the amusing lyrical content.
Promising a blunt narration of revenge upon a cheating partner, Stringer swears that she’s “a f***ing b***h for finally telling the truth,” but the near constant curses make her dilute overall exploration of gender relations in friendships and cause listeners to overlook the pressing issue of double-standards considered in Oh My God
Despite her strong vocals and entertaining demeanour, the song falls flat compared to her past work. The ‘darker’ sound she seems to be chasing just doesn’t align with her demeanour. On tracks like ‘End of an Era,’ Stringer’s sound appears to be much more authentic, with her outpouring of frustration coming across as heart wrenching instead of artificial.
In spite of the release itself being underwhelming to me, Stringer self-describes her shows as “feminine rage live in concert,” and from her social media pages, I completely understand this. I think she’s got a way to go artistically, but I think her vocals themselves offer more potential than this song has to offer.
It seems as if she hasn’t cemented her sound yet - not to say that sonic experimentation is a real fault - but this seems to be a track that hasn’t been fully fleshed out. The sound ultimately lacks the energy that makes adjacent songs like Cola Head by Willow Kayne compelling.
If she does want to become a rockstar, I think she could work with producers like Rob Brinkman, one of the minds behind Hannah Grae’s mini-album, ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’, to polish her sound. She has backing behind her after her American Idol stint, so she should work to refine this and find a sound that well and truly works for her.
