Something Blue - BNNY
‘Something Blue’ is the latest single from Chicago band BNNY, from their new album One Million Love Songs. ‘Something Blue’ is a gorgeous, breathy indie rock song that is the perfect introduction for those who have not yet listened to BNNY.
The song begins with a relaxed bass and guitar, giving the song a slight ’90s alt/indie feel to it, as lead singer, Jessica Viscius, sings of her struggles to stop looking back on her past. The rhythm begins to harden as the song approaches the chorus, with the tempo quickening slightly. The chorus has Viscius’ repetitive, chant-like lyric of ‘The past keeps catching up’ followed by an ethereal voice singing ‘I’m running’ quietly in the background, which gives a slight anxious feel to the song. It creates the anxiety of running away from something, in this case the past, but never being able to break free from it. The panting we hear throughout the song adds to this almost claustrophobic feeling, being trapped and unable to escape.
The second verse beautifully summaries this inability to leave the past behind and the pessimistic view that the protagonist is feeling, with the lines ‘starting over, what’s the use?’, ‘Something different, someone new’. The frustrated feelings begin begin to turn to anger at the end of the second verse, ‘well, fuck my dreams and fuck you too’, the music however, remains mellow in tempo before speeding up for the final chorus that sees out the song.
‘Something Blue’ feels like a more indie and sophisticated of the grungy teen-pop we are seeing a resurgence of thanks to the likes of Olivia Rodrigo. Overall it is a fantastic single, that highlights the talents of BNNY and leaves listeners wanting more.
