Spaceman - Vision Arcade
American indie rock band, Vision Arcade were formed in 2018 and have a dedicated following, as well as over 50,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. Their latest single ‘Spaceman’ is a brilliant example of how well Vision Arcade do simplicity and is truly a testament to the talents of the band. Having only previously listened to ‘War Machine’ and ‘Hey Honey’, I was first struck by the different vibe ‘Spaceman’ has, it is a much mellower song than the others I had heard.
‘Spaceman’ is a stellar example of indie easy listening. Though the song’s lyrics are repetitive, it adds to the overall charm of the song. The stripped back instruments allow the singer’s voice to take centre stage for the entirety of the song, while providing the perfect melody to carry the listener along and provides the song with depth.
The song opens with the chorus, the opening lines of ‘I could be your spaceman walking, I could be your spaceman walking through the stars for you’ immediately grab the listeners attention. The song then walks us through the narrators love story, the first verse beginning with ‘once upon a time’. ‘Spaceman’ is, at its heart, a love song, with the narrator expressing the length that they would go to for the woman ‘tied up in my imagination’. The lyrics paint a vivid image of the Spaceman’s cosmic lover and how he sees her ‘Making angels in the stardust’. The song closes with the repeated chorus, the melody remaining stoic and gentle.
‘Spaceman’ is a must for any indie lover and a welcomed addition to any evening playlist too! I cannot wait to see what is next for Vision Arcade.
