‘Underneath the Moonlight’ is the new single from French singer-songwriter, DIVIANNE. Known for her dreamy vocals, DIVIANNE is also an extremely talented writer, her writing skills are showcased beautifully in her newest single.
‘Underneath the Moonlight’ has a gentle and ethereal quality to it, beginning with a slightly electronic sound that then dissolves into a stripped and simple melody. The guitar work in this song feels very Lindsey Buckingham-esc and adds to the Fleetwood Mac vibes that DIVIANNE is somewhat known for.
‘I don’t mind sitting in the corner, I let you shine underneath the moonlight’, The lyrics illustrate the narrator’s willingness to stand back and let their loved one tale centre stage. ‘Go make a wish, I’ll hold it tight, for longer than you realise’ continues with this theme of unconditional love, showing how deeply the protagonist cares for the person they are singing about. It paints the image of someone who will not only let their partner take centre stage but of someone who also keeps their partner’s dreams and hopes in their mind and behaves in such a way to ensure they reach this goal.
Throughout the song, we begin to get the impression that the narrator is an anchoring point for their partner - a ‘home’. The protagonist gives the impression of always being there for their partner, should they be needed. This is reflected in the pre-chorus, ‘When the waves come crashing down and home is out of sight, if you get lost in the night, come shine’, echoing the earlier sentiment from the narrator that their partner ‘lights up’ their world, simply by ‘being alive’.
The chorus comprises of the repeated line ‘underneath the moonlight’ with some light vocal layering. Though simple in structure, the chorus further adds to the spellbinding feel of the song with the textural experimentation of the music.
‘Underneath the Moonlight’ feels like dancing in the light of the moonlight, on a beach on a warm Summer’s night with the waves crashing gently on the shoreline. It is a powerful example of feminine artistry, which leaves the listener feeling both melancholic and enchanted.
